Roosevelt Inn - Hotel Hell Update - Open or Closed?

Hotel Hell Roosevelt Inn

In this Hotel Hell episode, Gordon Ramsay visits the Roosevelt Inn in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

The Roosevelt Inn is located in an old school building.

The Inn is run by John Hough, Tina, his wife and her daughter Lorien. John also doubles as the chef of the Inn’s restaurant.

Gordon arrives at the Inn and is not impressed with the exterior and compares it to a funeral parlour.

Inside he is met by an unpleasant smell that he finds out is from the dogs.

John reveals to Gordon that the Inn is his old elementary school, with old school pictures on display on the wall.

There is a Ballroom that cost $54,000 to renovate 4 years prior. Gordon is in disbelief at both the cost and the decor as the room looks more dated.

John reveals that the inns occupancy has only been at 20% for a whole year.

Gordon is taken up to his room, it is dated, very pink and the room costs $319 a night.

Gordon speaks to John about his apparent casual attitude and John tells him he occasionally gets violent with guests if they upset him. John gets upset at Gordon's comments and leaves.

Gordon uses the time alone to inspect the room and he finds dust everywhere in the room.

Meeting with the couple afterwards Gordon tries to get to the heart of the problems in the business.

Gordon meets Tina who worked in a dental office prior to running the Inn. She says the Inn was an impulse purchase by John and he bought it without her consent.

John tells Gordon that they spent $700,000 to buy the Inn and now owe $1.1 million. They have had to sell their house, cash in a 401k and live in the attic at the Inn.

Tina is serious about their problems but John is still casual and laughing. They reveal that the inn is a strain on their relationship and have sought counselling.

That evening, Gordon wants to observe the inn in action and attends the murder mystery event which is hosted every month.

John is out front as Sherlock Holmes while Tina, also in costume, works in their small kitchen. They only made $200 for the evenening as all the guests are locals who are not staying the night.

After the event, Gordon speaks to John and tells him he is more interested in putting on a show than being an innkeeper.

He lets him know the priority should be booking rooms because they are not doing well financially. It gets slightly heated and John walks away.

The next day, Gordon speaks with John briefly before sitting down in the restaurant to try John’s cooking.

There are other locals in for lunch and everyone is having the same five course set menu meal.

Gordon is not impressed by the shrimp cocktail, which has a watery base and other patrons also have the same complaints about the dish.

The next course of salmon is also sent back to the kitchen by Gordon. He requests a boiled egg to test John's cookery skills but it ends up being undercooked.

Gordon enters the kitchen to remind him once again of the poor standards but John is still not willing to listen to criticism.

The next day, Gordon reveals that he had slept on the couch as he couldn't sleep on the bed and invites John and Tina up to his room.

In his room Gordon has invited guests who have stayed in the Inn in the last 6 months to come talk to the owners.

They complain that the Inn is out of date, has too much going on, the food quality wasn’t worth the value and none would stay at the Inn again.

John and Tina are shocked at the feedback as they thought they were doing better than that and John admits his view is changing.

They are all given goggles to wear and a black light test reveals that the beddings and the mattress have bodily fluids on them.

The guests are disgusted and Tina is moved to tears at the discovery.

Tina shares that she is not happy, she is tired of the inn taking over her whole life and she wishes she could leave.

The next day, Gordon and Tina meet to discuss the ballroom, he believes it is a potential income earner. Tina admits it is only used twice a month and they are working with a wedding planner.

Gordon meets with the wedding planner Misty for feedback and she reveals that the ball room is hard to sell because of its decor, dated colours and the smells.

It is too out-dated for modern brides to appreciate and John once joined in a dance at a guest’s wedding.

When Gordon returns to the Inn he sits down with the couple and John finally admits he needs to change. John and Tina have a heart to heart.

Gordon begins working on improving the Inn with an all new menu featuring home cooked meals that can be cooked in one pot out of their small kitchen.

Gordon’s team work all night on renovations and they reveal a new honeymoon suite and the new ballroom has been decorated and set up for a wedding.

They are gifted plates and glasses worth $50,000 for the table settings in the ballroom.

Misty the wedding planner is brought back in and she is happy with the changes and believes the ballroom can now meet most wedding expectations.

Gordon reveals to the pair that he has booked a wedding for their new ballroom that evening for their relaunch!

The wedding party love the rooms and both John and Tina cook the wedding meals from Gordon’s new menu.

The wedding is a big success with the Inn’s rooms fully booked for the first time in a while.

  1. To be honest I was really hoping that Tina left him. John is a despicable excuse for a human being and I wanted to punch him in the face watching this episode. Talk about being a manchild!

    1. Here's hoping he finally grew up and learned how to behave like an adult, for his wife's sake if nothing else.

    2. Yeah it's called editing. They purposely depict people to look a certain way so they can tell a story in 43 minutes. I would love to be there for the entire filming of an episode.

  2. I agree Ami...I watched the first 10 minutes and was wondering why he is wife hadn't kicked him to the kerb. She deserves a sainthood.

    1. Marriage is for better or worse, both of you don't seem to get that.

    2. That's 20th century thinking. Life's too short for such an attitude.

    3. For better or worse only counts when both people are trying. It obviously doesn't have to be 50/50 all the time, but 13 years of her giving all and him taking even more, that's not a relationship. He'll drive her to an early grave at this rate. He doesn't care about her well being. If you want to talk old school values, he's failing in every way that a husband can fail. It's not the money, it's every way that he tells her that she doesn't matter all the time.

  3. I don't think that he didn't care. Running a business with that much money in debt is extremely stressful, it can change someone. In the end, seeing how they're still open, I guess he finally changed his ways.

  4. Judging from the reviews and their website, they look very successful now. Eventhough I initially hated John in Hotel Hell, since they are still together running the b&b, I guess they also manage to repair their marriage. Part of me think it's because they don't have the financial stress and John finally living outside of his fantasy world and take some responsibilities.

  5. I'm really happy that this worked out for them. Tina is an amazing human being for putting her dreams aside for her husband, and he should have woken up long ago, he's a lucky man for having her. Good thing they had the cohones to call Gordon's show.

  6. I loved this episode. Tina is a class act, John is fun loving, I know that his decisions brought a lot of hardship, but there is huge potential in that place. I really hope they are doing well.
