Kitchen Nightmares - Downcity - CLOSED

Kitchen Nightmares Downcity

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visits Downcity, Providence, RI, bought by Abby Cabral and best friend Rico Conforti in 2005. Rico has a full-time job in finance and Abby has been working in restaurants for 30 years. Chef Ramsay arrives and is greeted by Abby, who rates the food 10 out of 10. He says the room service at the hotel next door, which is done by them, was awful as the soup and crab cakes were cold and disgusting. Gordon orders the crispy calamari, "3-way" nachos, and Meatloaf. The calamari is covered in sauce, soggy and chewy, the nachos are more like a funeral in his mouth and the meatloaf is lukewarm. Gordon gets the staff together and discovers there isn’t a head chef as Abby is responsible for the menu and after some arguing Gordon leaves. She tells the staff Gordon is wrong and the food is great but the staff admit that they don’t like the food. Rico arrives for dinner service and says he has invested $1million and if it fails he could lose his job as a mortgage advisor.

Gordon goes into the kitchen and finds it in a mess. He calls Rico and Abby down to take a look and Abby insists that the refrigerator wasn't like that before. They get into a huge argument and Abby orders Gordon to leave so he leaves. Rico chases after him but there is nothing he can do with Abby so deep in denial. Gordon explains to Abby that he has had failures in business and it can be turned around. Gordon sits all the staff down for a meeting and Abby admits she is defensive but promises to change. For the dinner service Gordon removes half the items to relieve pressure on the kitchen and introduces a roast chicken special. The food going out quickly, loved by the customers and Abby is relaxed. However, before long the kitchen gets behind, customers are left waiting and Abby gets stressed. Gordon reveals he has called in a consultant chef, who is in the next morning and introduces a new comfort food menu featuring a goats cheese truffle dip, sliders and a new improved meatloaf.

For relaunch night Gordon invites a local food blogger, Stacy Place, who had written a brutal review. As the night gets underway, the food is sent out quickly, the customers love the new menu and the new food. After a communication break down the food slows down and customers are left waiting, including the blogger who is live tweeting. Gordon shows her a tweet about waiting for food and she goes on the line to regain control of the kitchen. The bloggers truffle dip arrives and she gives it a great review. The food begun to go out quickly and the customers are happy with their food. After Chef Ramsay left, Chef James stayed at the restaurant to train Jimmy and Abby promoted Jimmy to head chef.

What Happened Next?

Gordon revisits and is greeted by Rico and Abby, business is up 30% and Jimmy is still there and doing well. Gordon inspects the fridge finding it to be organised and sits down to lunch, which is delicious. Gordon notices that there is some tension between them and Rico tells Gordon that Abby explodes at him instead of the staff.

The restaurant closed on 10th December 2011, blaming the economy.

Food blogger Stacy Place has answered questions on her appearance on the show,

Question - Why did they say you have 10,000 followers?

Answer - People assumed since Gordon was reading my Twitter feed that the show was referring to me having 10,000 Twitter followers. I don't. The producers had asked me how many people had read my blog and I replied about 250 per week. Multiplying that by 52 weeks, they rounded down to 10,000. Of course, 3,000 people have read it just since the episode aired!

Kitchen Nightmares - Sushi Ko - CLOSED

Kitchen Nightmares Sushi Ko

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visits Sushi Ko, Thousand Oaks, CA, a sushi restaurant based in California run by award winning Chef Akira and his family. They named Sushi Ko after the successful Sushi Ko restaurant that Akira worked in. Business was booming when they opened but now it has dwindled away and they are losing $15-20,000 each month. Gordon orders a bowl of miso, the recommended sushi pizza, the green tower and the salmon sashimi. The miso soup is salty and isn't very hot, the green tower has a grey hair in it, the salmon sashini is frozen and chewy and the sushi pizza is rancid and Gordon spits it out. Gordon discovers the soup is kept warm overnight and he tells them the pizza is an insult to both pizza and sushi. Gordon sits down with Hana and Sammy who admit they don't like being there and that they believe their father has given up. Sammy reveals he has given his father a total of $20,000+ to help them stay afloat.

Gordon witnesses a dinner serbice, to cut costs the sticks used to serve sushi are reused and some have bits of food on them. The customers aren't happy with the tempura broccoli they are served saying it is doughy and mushy and Gordon discovers that the fryer is malfunctioning and mayonnaise is kept outside. He also finds that one fridge is hot, there is a box of ice to keep the items in there cool. Gordon sits Lisa, Hana and Sammy down to talk about Akira, Lisa tells Gordon about Akira when they first met, whereas now he is a broken man and no longer smiles. Gordon tells them they need to bring Akira's confidence and self esteem back for the restaurant and they all talk positively about Akira to help lift his spirits. Gordon has refitted the kitchen with new equipment; new refrigeration units, deep fat fryers, a new freezer and a hob burner and Akira is overjoyed with them.

For dinner service there are two salmon specials alongside the sushi menu. Akira is excited about being behind the counter but wife Lisa does not appear to be supporting him. The first order went out incorrect as Akira did not check before sending the dish out. Gordon tells Akira that the change is night and day and that he looked like he enjoyed what he was doing. He next talks to Lisa to say that she wasn't positive and needs to back off.  Overnight they makeover the restaurant with a fresh, contemporary design with artwork by son Sammy. The menu is also revamped with more modern sushi dishes.  On relaunch night, Akira pushes the food out quickly and the customers are happy with the food until Akira loses focus. Without leadership, the kitchen is falling apart as Akira is taking dishes out to the table but he takes Gordons advice and returns to the kitchen. The staff however pulled together while Akira was away from the kitchen and the relaunch is a success.

What Happened Next?

In the following days, there was an upturn in business and Akira and Lisa were working as a successful team. They decided to move location to one with a lower rent and were searching at the time of filming. The restaurant closed in August 2009. Owner Lisa believes that the relaunch was too little too late and that the business had already failed. Sammy posted this on his blog,
"After four years of being at The Lakes in Thousand Oaks Sushi Ko has shut its doors. We have all tried so hard from the beginning and put in so much effort but it just never worked out. It feels as if we have somewhat lost a part of ourselves, and it is a bitter/sweet ending. Only a few months after we filmed Kitchen Nightmares and all got rejuvenated and excited to be there again, we got the bad news. We all went from being on such a high and happy with the “new” restaurant and then shortly after got pushed to the bottom. Somehow business got worse after we filmed it and the center seemed more deserted then it ever has been. Partly the economy, and partly ________, it was just not looking good. I am glad I got to go into the kitchen and learn the new menu and how to cook tho, it has been a great experience and I did not want it to stop. We(family) all had to bite our lips and keep it in for a month before we decided what we were going to tell everyone and what we were going to do, and it was really hard emotionally for all of us to go in there day after day knowing it was all going to end. After we started telling people with a month to go we all felt a little better. We decided to close doors to the public on the 8th of August, almost exactly four years after we opened."

After Sushi Ko had closed Nate 'n Al Delicatessen opened in it's space, which has since closed and the reviews were bad. In it's place now is Unami Burger, a popular burger chain and reviews are good.

Kitchen Nightmares - Fleming - CLOSED

Kitchen Nightmares Fleming

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visits Fleming in Miami, Florida owned by Andy and wife Suzanne, once the busiest restaurant in town, it has dwindled to nothing except a few loyal customers. The owners know nothing of Danish cuisine so hired cuban chef Orlando and the décor is dated as nothing has changed in over 10 years. Orlando is keen to change the menu but Andy is reluctant to alienate the customers. Gordon arrives at the restaurant expecting to meet Danish owners only to discover that the Danish have left and the chef is Cuban. Gordon is served crudités before his meal and says it is old fashioned. His server Julie who has been there 15 years says the only thing that has changed in that time is the staff. Gordon orders the Cured Salmon Gravlax, Frikadelle and Grandfather Duck. The Gravlax is hideous, overdone with a dead fly on the side of the plate as a bonus, the Frikadelle is hot, bland and mushy and the duck looks like it was roasted a couple of days ago and is not even moist. Gordon notices that a customer has a foil swan tiramisu and Cindee teaches Gordon how to make it.

Gordon witnesses a dinner service, the food makes its way out of the kitchen at a good speed but every dish is sent back to the kitchen for being bland and badly cooked. Gordon ventures into the fridges  and discovers raw, defrosting and cooked duck mixed together. Gordon orders them to remove the duck from the menu and the duck dishes from customers’ tables. Andy doesn't seem to think this a problem and believes they can carry on serving food. Gordon goes onto the street to talk to the locals, they tell him that no one will venture there until it changes as the food is dated and bad. Gordon tells them to start by forgetting about Danish food and challenges them to cook a dish each to impress Gordon. The front of house tries the food and loves it. Gordon revamps the restaurant with a huge makeover and the dated pink walls are gone! Gordon puts on a fashion show to attract and promote the restaurant to younger clientèle, gives Andy a makeover and he looks 10 years younger. The menu is changed with modern dishes and he introduces a desert trolley.

Relaunch night kicks off with Andy taking charge in the restaurant and the Miami Heat basketball players are the special guests. Customers get the choice of salads with their meals, however the chef is putting the wrong ingredients in the salad. The customers are getting impatient as the kitchen is backed up by salads. The old cooker stops working so they tinker with the equipment to get it to work again and end up causing a fire across the whole hob and Gordon saves the day, putting out the fire. The kitchen pulls together and the food makes its way out to the customers and they are happy with the food. Gordon tells them that the only thing standing in the way of success was their equipment but Gordon makes an emergency call and gets them a new oven and hob.

What Happened Next?

In the days that followed, they embraced Gordon's changes and Andy believes they are on the right track. However some weeks after filming, they kept some of Gordons menu but returned some old favourites to the menu that were popular with patrons. They also returned to serving crudites, offering soup of the day and caesar salad and they bought back the desert bar.

The restaurant closed in October 2010.

Her father Angelo lent her $300,000 as he has been in the restaurant business for years with a successful pizzeria. She often has mood swings from crying hysterically to screaming at everyone and threatening to close the restaurant. She is on the edge of bankruptcy and about to lose her house, with debt of $190,000. Gordon arrives and is greeted by CeCe and meets her husband server Michael, who looks like a gangster in his suit. Gordon orders the salmon divino salad, snapper Anna and a pizza. The salmon is dry and overcooked, tastes like cardboard, the Snapper Anna looks like a dogs dinner and tastes of mush, Michael tastes it and says that it is soggy but CeCe refuses to taste it. The Pizza Del Nonna is soggy in the middle and crispy on the outside and generally bland. CeCe says that as he is British he knows nothing about pizza. Gordon asks Michael to tell CeCe his opinion about the snapper and he now says that was tender.

Gordon returns to watch a dinner service, he begins by inspecting the kitchen. The gnocchi is frozen and there are overcooked meatballs. The food goes out quickly and is sent back just as fast. CeCe continues to be defensive, refuses to recook dishes and walks out the kitchen. Michael steps in and attempts to get food out whilst many customers walk out. CeCe breaks down into tears outside and admits that she is scared of failure and Gordon tells her that he has failed and closed 3 restaurants.  Gordon comes in early to meet the chefs and asks them to cook the entire 181 dish menu and asks the servers to put stickers on the items that are fresh or frozen, 80% are frozen! Gordon works with CeCe to reduce the menu and introduces a family style lasagne special and a soup.

He goes back to New York City overnight to ponder what drastic action to take.

Gordon returns the next day with Chef Julieta Ballesteros, a top mexican chef. He has also had his team give the restaurant a makeover overnight with new chairs and tables and less clutter. There is also a new menu which Julieta teaches the chefs to prepare and cook. On relaunch night, they get off to a good start until food is sent back as cold and the chefs burn nachos. The Mayor calls to say he is going to be coming for dinner. The kitchen steps up and the Mayor brands the food as excellent and says he will come again. The other customers are also pleased with their food and overall the relaunch was a success. Gordon was impressed with Vic and takes him outside to unveil the new sign visible on the side of the building.

The restaurant was seized in September 2008 due to failing to pay taxes that were owed. It had been closed previously in July 2007 for failing to pay taxes but paid in full and were allowed to reopen, they should have learnt their lesson then! In August 2008 there was a stabbing at the restaurant. Recent images shows the building is empty and boarded up.

Kitchen Nightmares Sabatiello's

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visit's Sabatiello's, Stamford, CT, owned by Sammy Settembre, well known in the area for working in the pizzeria owned by his brother Benny. Sammy believes the décor and the food to be excellent so does not know why they have so few customers. Sammy is in $1,000,000 of debt and can barely afford to stay open another year. Gordon arrives and is greeted by Sammy who tells him that the décor is nice and warm and the food is good and is all made fresh. Gordon orders the soup of the day, a Wedding Soup, lasagne and the New York Strip steak. The Wedding Soup is hideous , bland with aneamic meatballs and tastes like it was made yesterday. The lasagne has white meat, tastes synthetic and is not home made. The steak is tough, not seasoned and greasy. Gordon meets Head Chef Jose who tells him the soup is three days old, the lasagne was made last Friday and frozen and the steak was not aberdeen angus as advertised. Gordon inspects the kitchen and finds it to be spotlessly clean. However, upon inspecting the fridge he discovers cooked and raw chicken next to each other, which Sammy thinks is no problem.

Gordon arrives to witness a dinner service. There is a Sole Special on the menu and Jose tells Gordon that it is stuffed with imitation crab meat so they taste the dish. Sammy says it is not bad whereas Gordon spits it out saying it is watery and mushy. One customer is not happy with her lamb and returns it to be cooked some more. Sammy tells the chef to put it on the microwave and she sends it back again as she expected them to put it back into a pan. Sammy goes into the restaurant to confront the customer, he handles it badly and refuses to apologise. The next morning he sits Sammy down to talk about the past, his brother Benny and the original restaurant. For the next dinner service Gordon introduces two new specials, a home made Lasagne and a Filet Mignon to be carved at the table. The restaurant is busy and Jose is not communicating, he has problems cooking the steaks and they are returned for being undercooked. Gordon tells Sammy the kitchen is now a big problem and Sammy says Jose is on his last chance.

The next day Gordon introduces a new menu changing the restaurant into an Italian Steakhouse. Gordon introduces the new dishes to the staff and they sample all the new steaks on the menu. Relaunch night arrives and Jose proves he isn't up to the task and the steaks are sent back as undercooked once again and the kitchen falls behind. Sammy makes the decision to step behind the line and help them out. He successfully turns the kitchen around and after the wait the customers are happy with their food and happy with the changes Gordon has made and the relaunch is dubbed as a success despite the glitches.
