Kitchen Nightmares - Downcity - CLOSED

Kitchen Nightmares Downcity

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visits Downcity, Providence, RI, bought by Abby Cabral and best friend Rico Conforti in 2005. Rico has a full-time job in finance and, Abby has been working in restaurants for over 30 years, Abby works in the restaurant while Rico injects the funds. Chef Ramsay arrives and is greeted by Abby, who rates the food 10 out of 10. He says he's starving because the room service at the hotel next door was awful, Abby reveals that they do the room service for the hotel. Gordon tells her the soup and crab cakes were cold and disgusting. Abby responds by telling him that is impossible. Gordon orders some lunch, ordering the crispy calamari, "3-way" nachos, and Meatloaf. The calamari arrives, Chef Ramsay hates the fact that it is covered in sauce and calls it soggy and chewy, the nachos are “more like a funeral in his mouth than a party in your mouth" and the meatloaf is lukewarm.

Gordon gets the staff together and discovers there isn’t a head chef. Gordon discovers Abby is responsible for the menu and after some arguing Gordon leaves. Meanwhile she tells the staff Gordon is wrong and the food is great. The staff admit that they don’t like the food and Abby says that she feels like she's been stabbed in the back. Rico arrives for dinner service and Gordon sits down for a chat with him, Rico admitting he has $1million invested in the restaurant and if it fails and he goes bankrupt he could lose his job as a mortgage adviser.

Gordon goes into the kitchen to investigate and finds a mess. He calls Rico and Abby down to take a look and Abby insists that the refrigerator wasn't like that before and starts screaming at Gordon. They get into a huge argument and Abby orders Gordon to leave so he leaves. Rico chases after him and Gordon explains that there is nothing he can do with Abby so deep in denial. Rico asks him to stay and Gordon agrees with Rico’s help. Chef Ramsay goes back inside and explains to Abby that he has made mistakes and had failures in business and it can be turned around. Gordon sits all the staff down for a meeting and Chef Jimmy admits that he struggles to keep up with standards with so many menu items. Abby admits she is defensive but promises to change.

Gordon witnesses a dinner service and Gordon removes half of the menu items to relieve pressure on Jimmy and the kitchen. He also introduces a roast chicken special. The food is improved, going out quickly and Abby is relaxed. However, before long the kitchen gets behind, customers are left waiting for food and Abby gets stressed. Abby says she is not sure Jimmy can run the kitchen despite the new menu. Gordon reveals he has called in a consultant chef, who is in the next morning. Chef Ramsay introduces a new comfort food menu featuring a goats cheese truffle dip, meatball sliders, lobster mac and cheese and a new improved meatloaf.

For relaunch night Gordon invites a local food blogger, Stacy Place, who had written a brutal review of Down City previously. As the night gets underway, the food is being sent out quickly, the customers love the new menu and the new food. After a communication break down the food slows down and customers are left waiting, including the blogger who tweets that she is waiting for her food. Gordon shows her the tweet and she goes on the line to regain control of the kitchen. The bloggers truffle dip arrives and she gives it a great review on twitter and after this the food continues to go out hastily and the customers are happy with their food. After Chef Ramsay left, Chef James stayed at the restaurant to train Jimmy and the other kitchen staff and Abby promoted Jimmy to head chef.

What Happened Next?

Gordon revisits and is greeted by Rico and Abby, the reveal business is up 30% and Abby rates the food a 10 again. Chef Jimmy is still there and impressing Abby. Gordon goes into the fridge and it is organised, he sits down to lunch and thinks the food is delicious. Gordon notices that there is some tension between them and Rico tells Gordon that Abby lets the volcano erupt on him instead of the staff. Food blogger Stacy Place has answered questions on her appearance on the show,

Question - Why did they say you have 10,000 followers?

Answer - People assumed since Gordon was reading my Twitter feed that the show was referring to me having 10,000 Twitter followers. I don't. The producers had asked me how many people had read my blog and I replied about 250 per week. Multiplying that by 52 weeks, they rounded down to 10,000. Of course, 3,000 people have read it just since the episode aired!

and other revelations from behind the cameras.

Kitchen Nightmares Sushi Ko

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visits Sushi Ko, Thousand Oaks, CA, a sushi restaurant based in California run by award winning Chef Akira and his family. His children Hana and Sammy are upset as they see their father becoming more depressed and his wife Lisa is constantly criticizing him. They named Sushi Ko after the successful Sushi Ko restaurant that Akira worked in located in Bel Air. Business was booming when they opened but now it has dwindled away, it is devastating to Akira to see the restaurant so empty. They are losing $15-20,000 each month and are in hundreds of thousands of debt. Relationships are strained between Lisa and Akira and Akira and his children.

Gordon arrives and meets Lisa and Akira and they tell them the problem is there are no guests. Gordon wants to sample the food and is recommended to try a sushi pizza by Akira. He orders a bowl of miso, the sushi pizza is not recommended by Server Ashleigh but he decides to try it out of curiosity, the green tower and the salmon sashimi. The server informs him that he has ordered some of the best and the worst. The miso soup doesn't taste fresh, is salty and isn't very hot. The green tower has a grey hair in it so he decides not to eat it. The salmon sashini is frozen and chewy and the sushi pizza is rancid, an insult to pizza and Gordon spits it out. Gordon gathers the staff in the kitchen and discovers that the kitchen staff don't wear hats for service. Gordon discovers the soup is kept warm overnight and he tells them the pizza is an insult to both pizza and sushi. Gordon sits down with Hana and Sammy to discuss the restaurant and they admit they don't like being there and that they believe their father has given up but he won't listen to them. Sammy reveals he has given his father a total of $20,000+ from his own income as a photographer to help them stay afloat.

Gordon witnesses a dinner service with a busy restaurant due to Gordon's presence. To cut costs the sticks used to serve sushi are reused and some have bits of food left on them and are sticky. The customers aren't happy with the tempura broccoli they are served saying it is doughy and mushy. Gordon suggests to take the dish off the service and discovers that the fryer is malfunctioning and isn't hot enough. He also discovers that the mayonnaise is kept outside which Gordon says is a health hazard. He also finds that one fridge is hot and showing a temperature of 50, Akira tells him that it broke down 4 months ago. There is a box of ice to keep the items in there cool and Akira tells him it is only for vegetables. Gordon however discovers dairy, eggs and meat in there and is told it is a mistake for them to be in there. Gordon tries to get through to Akira but he doesn't respond to Gordon and Lisa tells him he thinks he has given up, Akira has no answers for Gordon. Lisa rants away about Akiras problems and Gordon tells her to be quiet to give Akira a chance to talk. Gordon sits Lisa, Hana and Sammy down to talk about Akira, Lisa tells Gordon about Akira when they first met and that he was a funny guy, whereas now he is a broken man and no longer smiles. Gordon tells them they need to bring Akira's confidence and self esteem back for the restaurant to work. Akira returns from a walk around the lake and they all talk positively about Akira to help lift his spirits. Gordon has refitted the kitchen with new equipment; new refrigeration units, deep fat fryers, a new freezer and a hob burner and Akira is overjoyed with them. Gordon also reveals that Akira is to cook in the kitchen in a come back service for relaunch night.

For dinner service there are two salmon specials alongside the sushi menu. Akira is excited about being behind the counter but wife Lisa does not appear to be supporting him, saying he is still not working hard and doesn't think he will follow through with the change. The first order went out to the customers incorrect as Akira did not check before sending the dish out and Lisa nags at him. He corrects the mistake and refocuses on the task sending out food that the customers enjoyed. Gordon tells Akira that the change is night and day and that he looked like he enjoyed what he was doing. He next talks to Lisa to say that she hasn't changed and she wasn't positive and was cold like a block of ice. He tells her to back off and she agrees she is a bitch to Akira and it's not a good way to be. Overnight they makeover the restaurant and Akira and Lisa appear holding hands and cuddling. They have revamped the décor with a fresh, contemporary design with artwork by son Sammy. The menu is also revamped with more modern sushi dishes.

Relaunch night sees traditional taiko drummers to begin the evening and a gong announces the reopening. Akira pushes the food out quickly and the customers are happy with the food until Akira loses focus and is focusing on other tasks than cooking. Without leadership, the kitchen is falling apart as Akira is taking dishes out to the table instead of solely cooking in the kitchen as the chef. Akira takes Gordons advice and returns to the kitchen, focusing solely on cooking. The staff however pulled together while Akira was away from the kitchen.

What Happened Next?

In the following days, there was an upturn in business and Akira and Lisa were working as a successful team. They decided to move the restaurants location to one with a lower rent and were searching at the time of filming. The restaurant closed in August 2009. Owner Lisa believes that the relaunch was too little too late and that the business had already failed. Sammy posted this on his blog,

"After four years of being at The Lakes in Thousand Oaks Sushi Ko has shut its doors. We have all tried so hard from the beginning and put in so much effort but it just never worked out. It feels as if we have somewhat lost a part of ourselves, and it is a bitter/sweet ending. Only a few months after we filmed Kitchen Nightmares and all got rejuvenated and excited to be there again, we got the bad news. We all went from being on such a high and happy with the “new” restaurant and then shortly after got pushed to the bottom. Somehow business got worse after we filmed it and the center seemed more deserted then it ever has been. Partly the economy, and partly ________, it was just not looking good. I am glad I got to go into the kitchen and learn the new menu and how to cook tho, it has been a great experience and I did not want it to stop. We(family) all had to bite our lips and keep it in for a month before we decided what we were going to tell everyone and what we were going to do, and it was really hard emotionally for all of us to go in there day after day knowing it was all going to end. After we started telling people with a month to go we all felt a little better. We decided to close doors to the public on the 8th of August, almost exactly four years after we opened."

After Sushi Ko had closed Nate 'n Al Delicatessen opened in it's space, this has since closed and reviews were bad. In it's place now is Unami Burger, a popular burger chain. Reviews are good.

Kitchen Nightmares - Fleming - CLOSED

Kitchen Nightmares Fleming

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visits Fleming in Miami, Florida owned by Andy and wife Suzanne, once the busiest restaurant in town, now the custom has dwindled to nothing except a few loyal customers. The Danish food is cooked by a Cuban chef and the décor is dated as the owner hasn't changed a thing in over 10 years. The owners know nothing of Danish cuisine and hired Orlando to cook their Danish menu. Orlando is keen to change the menu but Andy is reluctant to change to alienate the old clientèle. The servers check the obituaries to check no regulars have passed away. Relationships are strained between Andy and his staff and Andy and Suzanne. Their house is on the line if they do not succeed.

Gordon arrives at the restaurant expecting to meet Danish immigrants running the restaurant and attempt to speak Danish to them only to discover that the Danish have left the building and the chef is Cuban. He also discovers that it is the previous owners that were Danish and they have kept everything the same since they bought it. Gordon notices the desert plates on the side and is not impressed. Gordon is served crudités before his meal and says it is old fashioned. His server Julie who has been there 15 years says the only thing that has changed in that time is the staff. Gordon orders the Cured Salmon Gravlax, Frikadelle and Grandfather Duck. The Gravlax is hideous, overdone and tastes like fly paper with a dead fly on the side of the plate as a bonus. The Frikadelle is hot, bland and mushy. Gordon notices that another customer has an amazing foil swan tiramisu and Cindee teaches Gordon how to make it. The duck looks like it was roasted a couple of days ago and is not even moist. Gordon meets the Chef and tells him that the food is bland.

Gordon witnesses a dinner service with a full restaurant due to Gordon being there. Food makes its way out of the kitchen at a good speed but the customers aren't happy and the food is sent back to the kitchen as bland and badly cooked. Every single dish sent out to the customers is returned. Gordon ventures into the fridges to get to the root of the problems and discovers a mountain of terrible food in the fridge. There is raw, defrosting and cooked duck mixed together. Gordon orders them to remove the duck from the menu and remove the duck dishes from customers’ tables as it is contaminated. Andy doesn't seem to think this a problem and believes they can carry on serving food. Not happy with Andy’s laidback attitude and being in denial Gordon decides to talk to Suzanne, she feels let down by Andy. Gordon goes onto the street to talk to the locals, they tell him that no one talks about it anymore; no one will venture there until it changes as the food is dated and bad. The staff knows changes need to be made but Andy does not agree. Gordon tells them to start by forgetting about Danish food and challenges them to cook a dish each to impress Gordon. The front of house tries the food and loves it. Gordon revamps the restaurant with a huge makeover of the restaurant; the dated pink walls are gone! Next Gordon puts on a fashion show to attract and promote the restaurant to younger clientèle. Gordon also gives Andy a makeover and he looks 10 years younger. The menu is also given a makeover with modern contemporary items including crab cakes and other dishes that are downsized. He also introduces a desert trolley instead of the plates on the side.

Relaunch night kicks off with an energized Andy taking charge in the restaurant. The Miami Heat basketball players are the special guests in the restaurant for the relaunch. Customers get the choice of salads with their meals, however the chef is putting the wrong ingredients in the salad. The customers are getting impatient as the kitchen is backed up by the cold salads. The kitchen pulls together and recovers from the salad crisis. Until the old cooker gives up and stops working. They tinker with the equipment to get it to work again and end up causing a fire across the whole hob. Gordon saves the day, putting out the fire. The kitchen pulls together and the food makes its way out to the customers and they are very happy with the food. Gordon tells them that the only thing standing in the way of success was their equipment but Gordon makes an emergency call and gets them a new oven and hob.

What happened next?

In the days that followed, they embraced Gordon's changes and Andy has his fire back in him and believes they are going to be on the right track. However some weeks after filming, they kept some of Gordons menu but returned some old favourites to the menu and old traditions popular with patrons. They also returned to serving crudites as customers sat down, offering soup of the day and caesar salad with their meal and they bought back the desert bar. The restaurant closed in October 2010.

Kitchen Nightmares - Anna Vincenzo's - CLOSED

Kitchen Nightmares Anna Vincenzo's

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visits Anna Vincenzo's, Boca Raton, FL, an Italian restaurant owned by self taught cook CeCe who moved from New York with her father Angelo and husband Michael. Her father lent her $300,000 in 2001 to get her started with the restaurant as Angelo has been in the restaurant business for years with a successful pizzeria. She doesn't want to hear any criticism or that her food is not up to par and often has mood swings from crying hysterically to screaming at everyone and threatening to close the restaurant. No one stands up to her so she continues in her ways. She is on the edge of bankruptcy and about to lose her house, with debt to the tune of $190,000 to her father and no customers.

Gordon arrives and is greeted by CeCe, stared at by her father and also meets Husband Server Michael who he says looks like a gangster in his suit. He surprises server Ashton by ordering everything on the menu before seeing the menu, he then discovers that the menu is huge and reveals that it was a joke. Gordon orders the salmon divino salad, snapper Anna and a pizza. The salmon is dry and overcooked, tastes like cardboard and Gordon asks if it is fresh or frozen, it comes in fresh and is then frozen. The Snapper Anna looks like a dogs dinner and tastes of mush, Michael tastes it and says that it is soggy and needs to be baked for longer. CeCe refuses to taste the snapper. CeCe sends a message to Gordon via Ashton and he tells her to send CeCe out. The Pizza Del Nonna is soggy in the middle and crispy on the outside and generally bland. CeCe says that as he is British he knows nothing about pizza and when he tells her his opinion of the food she is not impressed with his criticisms. Gordon asks Michael to tell CeCe his opinion about the snapper he tried and he now says that is tender. Gordon has enough and walks out.

Gordon returns to watch a dinner service, he begins by inspecting the kitchen. The gnocchi is frozen and there are overcooked meatballs. The food goes out quickly and is sent back just as fast as there is no flavour. CeCe continues to be defensive, refuses to recook dishes and walks out the kitchen. Michael steps in and attempts to get food out whilst many customers fed up walk out of the restaurant. CeCe breaks down into tears outside and admits that she is scared of failure and Gordon tells her that he has failed as he has had to close 3 restaurants.

Gordon comes in early to meet the chefs and asks them to cook the entire 181 dish menu before the rest of the staff arrive. The staff arrive to the restaurant filled with the dishes and huge printed menus and asks the servers to put stickers on the items that are fresh or frozen. The majority of the items at 80% are frozen! Gordon works with CeCe to reduce the menu and introduces a family style lasagne special and a soup. Overnight the restaurant has a makeover showcasing a much lighter, contemporary restaurant with all new tableware and a caricature of CeCe. The new family style menu is revealed and it has been halved. Gordon brings in a restaurant consultant Daniel for a month to help get the kitchen back on track. Gordon reveals his marketing plan of a pizza making contest with local sportsmen and radio stations invited to take part with the Miami Dolphins declared the winner. The new menu is introduced to the staff, showcasing the freshness of the food and they are impressed with the taste.

On relaunch night, the service starts with the food going out quickly and enjoyed by the customers. The special sells out very quickly and CeCe abandons the quality control attempting to send out poor quality and burnt dishes before instead recooking the dish. The customers continually compliment the dishes and the relaunch is a success.

What Happened Next?

Gordon revisits and Anna Vincenzo's has gone out of business. Gordon talks to ex server Ashton who reports she went back to her old ways, raising prices and made portions smaller. He then visits CC at home and she looks fantastic! She lost a lot of weight. She sold the restaurant to spend more time with her kids and her and Michael have separated. In Anna Vincenzo's place Nino's of Boca II has opened, the East Side restaurant of Ninas on the West Side.

Kitchen Nightmares - Mama Rita's - CLOSED

Kitchen Nightmares Mama Rita's

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visits Mama Rita's, Newbury Park, CA, a Mexican restaurant named after owner Laura's Grandma, she runs the restaurant alongside a catering business. She was successful in the catering business so thought she could succeed in running a restaurant as it is "just adding a dining room". Perla is a cook and not a chef and is "family" to Laura. Head Server Brad says she is not a good boss as there are no set rules and her mother works as a server. The restaurant was busy at first and the customers have dwindled. Laura is in $2.2million debt and at risk of losing her house.

Gordon arrives and says the restaurant is stunning. Laura recommends the tamales and Gordon sits down to order some food. Brad advices a long list of dishes for Gordon to avoid as they are dry. Gordon orders the tamales, chimichanga and a burrito. The tamales are like soaking wet newspaper but dry. Laura tells him that they make them in big batches and steam them. The chimichanga are microwaved then fried, the chicken is dry. The steak burrito is like a diaper and like eating wet cardboard. Gordon enters the kitchen to meet the staff and they reveal the food in the restaurant is the same food as they use for catering.

Gordon arrives to witness a dinner service and the restaurant is packed. The food goes out very fast to the customers but they are not happy with the food they receive and Gordon compares it to fast food. Gordon suspects they are taking short cuts, he looks in a small freezer and pulls out a lot of frozen food from 2 months ago... He enters the walk in freezer and finds a lot more frozen food. All Laura continues to say throughout is that "This is what we did for catering". He describes them as a factory processing plant that defrosts and serves. Gordon empties the fridges and freezers and puts all the food on display in the restaurant, the amount is huge ad some of it is disgusting. Some of the food is from as far back as last year!

Gordon invites some ex customers to talk to Laura about the restaurant and what went wrong. They says the food isn't creative and they got sick with stomach problems, probably due to defrosting frozen food. Gordon challenges Laura and Perla to each cook a new dish for the menu with fresh ingredients. Perla struggles to come up with a dish, she comes up with "garlic breast" with garlic and salt, which is bland and uncreative compared to Gordon's steak and Laura's blackened shrimp tacos. For the evening service, the specials are popular but they struggle to cook the fresh fish and steak. Perla struggles to run the kitchen and the large team of cooks are struggling too. Gordon tells Laura that Perla is not a Head Chef. Gordon invites Chef Naris Mardirosian to help in the kitchen as a consultant and the menu is revamped with fresh, seasonal ingredients, the staff taste the food and love it.

For relaunch night, Naris is overseeing but Perla is not working with Naris and is struggling. The cooks stand there doing nothing while the customers face a long wait for food. Food is sent back with burnt chips, missing beans and cheese, more raw steak. Even Chef Naris struggles with the chaos of the kitchen caused by Perla, there are tears from both Chefs. Gordon makes it clear to Laura that Perla is not capable of running the kitchen and Laura should consider getting rid of her. Laura and Perla have a weird, inappropriate, touchy feely heart to heart conversation but Laura refuses to sack Perla. Naris is forced to step up and the service finishes well with her help and the customers love the food.

What Happened Next?

After Gordon left Naris stayed for a few weeks to help get the restaurant off the ground, Perla was removed as Head Chef and to continue working in the catering side. Laura reverted back to her old menu from Gordon's menu and portion sizes to mixed reviews. The Restaurant has closed but the catering business is still in business. Laura is running a restaurant called Mission Oaks Cafe in Camarillo, CA.

Kitchen Nightmares Hot Potato Cafe

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visit's Hot Potato Cafe, Philadelphia, PA to help three Sisters running a restaurant with their niece Danielle in the kitchen. The problems arose as they focused more on the décor of the restaurant and a bad review by a local newspaper in which the restaurant was dubbed as "Spuddy Hell" has ruined the reputation of the restaurant. Danielle doesn't really want to be a chef and is only there to help out the family. The owners don't seem to know what is wrong with the restaurant and upon seeing the menu Gordon asks the sisters to recommend a dish each, no one recommends a potato dish to him despite it being a potato themed restaurant. Gordon orders the Hot Potato Soup, Spud Skins and a Shepherds Pie, the Hot Potato Soup was "a mess" and "like lumps of glue", the 3 week old frozen Spud Skins tasted dreadful and the Shepherds Pie was "2/3 mash, 1/3 greasy minced lamb".

Gordon watches a dinner service, the kitchen is a mess with no organisation at all. No one steps up to admit mistakes have been made and everyone has given up. Gordon dramatically walks out and the owners follow him, a tear filled heart to heart brings Gordon back in to continue helping the restaurant. As Gordon is not happy with the current potato dishes he challenges the owners to make the best Potato dish, with the winner going on the menu and Gordon is most impressed with Danielles dish. At dinner service, Gordon notices the portions were HUGE! Customers took lots of food away in takeaway boxes, taking with them the restaurants profits. They smashed the old massive plates, and Gordon bought in chef Richard to mentor Danielle for a month. He also got them free potatoes for 3 months from a local supplier. Gordon invites Mr "Spuddy Hell" back on opening night, he enjoys the food and they pulled off the relaunch with no dishes returned.

What Happened Next?

Danielle left the restaurant and the quality started to slip back to the old ways, the restaurant was closed in May 2010 and put up for sale on Craiglist.

Lloyd Whiskey Bar opened in October 2012 with restaurant, the menu looks great and reviews are good.

Gordon's food takes a long time to arrive and is rolled out to his table on a trolley. The Risotto was a mush, salty and just deteriorates, the Duck Salad turns out to be a bizarre combination with orange, strawberries and candied walnuts and the crepes were store bought, mushy and hideous, deemed by Gordon as Crap of the Day. Gordon meets the chef and upon asking to see the risotto rice discovers it is a week old based on the date written on it! Gordon sits down with the couple to discuss the restaurant. Gordon investigates the walk-in and freezer and finds lots of items half frozen floating in water. Pinto explains that it's "fresh frozen" and that everything is frozen and they are taking it out a portion at a time.

Gordon watches a dinner service, in which customers wait a long time for their food. Chef Pinto Das and Sous Chef Barney Smith don't work together in the kitchen at all. The customers send the food back and Gordon finds out of season expensive vegetables such as asparagus. Pinto boasts that they are out of season and Gordon shouts at him as they are more expensive, which makes no sense when he can get cheaper produce which is in season. Gordon teaches the staff to make a fresh mushroom risotto and special salads, which are a big hit. That evening, the service is still slow despite losing the serving trolleys, the food is cold and the wrong sized portions are sent out. Gordon also notices that they are still not working together. Overnight, Gordon's team revamps the restaurant replacing all of the mismatched china. On relaunch night, Pinto is still slow, quiet and gets behind on the orders, for some tables the food takes over 3 and a half hours to get to them! Barney is doing all the work in the kitchen and Gordon takes Terry aside for a chat, afterwards he starts running the line and the kitchen gets back on track. Gordon sits down with Terry and Carol for a heart to heart and they give him an old expensive bottle of wine that he decides to keep there to be opened when he revisits.

What Happened Next?

At the end of the show, we are told that Pinto was fired and Barney was offered the Head Chefs job but he left to finish his culinary degree. He was replaced by Jorge Flores and Pinto was said to be working as a chef for a family in the area. Cafe 36 closed on 18 April 2009 blaming the economy and Gordon's changes to the restaurant but reviews after filming still complain of poor quality food.

Kitchen Nightmares Santé La Brea

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visit's Sante La Brea, Los Angeles, CA, a healthy Vegan restaurant run by owner Dean Hamoui and his sons Arthur and Sammy. They opened the restaurant 10 years ago along popular La Brea Avene in LA. They have a prime location but business is almost at nothing and they are in $200,000 of debt. Dean cooks and cleans whereas new manager Mark only does the interior decorating. As Gordon is about to arrive they discover that Chef Aurelio has not arrived and is not answering his phone. Gordon arrives at the restaurant and meets Dean, Dean shows him the grass that is growing on top of the counter and shows Gordon that it is edible. Gordon discovers that it isn't just vegan food that they serve but that they also serve chicken and fish. Dean reveals to Gordon that he believes the main problem with the restaurant is lack of money and that he had to borrow $10,000 from Mark. Gordon sits down on the patio to sample the food, he orders the Turkey Patty Melt, Mogadoofu and Blackened Salmon. He finds the patty melt dry and disgusting and feeds it to the dog Tubs who is sat on the patio. He brands the mogadoofu a joke, meaning s@*t in Chinese with the rice having been cooked to hell and overall he bands it shocking. Finally, the salmon is dry and tastes way too fishy. Gordon asks to inspect the fridge and discovers frozen salmon and turkey defrosting together and rotten vegetables. Dean says the responsibility is the Chefs and not his. Chef Aurelio arrives late with some lame excuse and Sammy and Arthur are angry at both him but Dean goes easy on him and this makes them angry at him too.

Gordon returns to witness a dinner service. Aurelio says he is just a Chef and that he does what he wants. Dean enters the kitchen and cleans up after the Chefs putting the food away. As food makes it out to the tables the customers aren't happy with what they have been served. Gordon discovers that they serve Unduck and Unfish, imitation duck and fish products. After the dinner service Gordon sits the staff down and talks about how no one is responsible for what they are doing and Dean says that no one listens to him. Gordon says the main problem is the food and the gimmick imitation food is not working. He also says the place is filthy and that they need to clean it, he covers their A Rating health inspection with an F rating poster. Overnight, they deep clean the restaurant and Gordon removes the poster when it is clean. Gordon takes Dean out to help him release the pressure from the restaurant, he gets him to shout out his frustrations at his staff. As soon as he gets back he shouts at Sammy when he does something he wasn't supposed to.

Gordon introduces two new specials for the evenings service, a halibut dish and a Shrimp salad. A policeman arrives and handcuffs Dean so he can't do every ones jobs for them. Mark once again tries to take orders when he isn't meant to. Mark puts menus under his sweaty armpit and is sent home to change, Gordon pops out and buys him some women's deodorant. As the customers are lining up, Aurelio dismisses Dean in the kitchen and at one point ignores him. The customers once again aren't happy. Gordon calls a meeting and tells them that it is the most bizarre restaurant and that the food is bland. The next day, they arrive to the restaurant after it has had an overnight makeover. They have a new sign and the entrance is decluttered. Gordon introduces the new menu featuring new items such as chilled tomato soup, new salads, egg white fritatta and Deans favourite Grilled Tofu.

On relaunch night, Mark once again doesn't listen to Dean and took orders for wine so Dean marches him out the back by his collar and shouts at him. Everyone is feeling the pressure, especially Dean and the Chefs. Aurelio threatens to leave mid service and Dean shouts at him and he leaves. He returns and says he will stay if he is paid the money he is owed, Gordon pays him the money out of his own pocket and Aurelio returns. The kitchen is backed up and the customers are waiting for food but they work together and successfully push all the food out and the customers are happy with the food and the relaunch is a success.

What Happened Next?

Gordon revisits the restaurant to find that Dean has retired and gone overseas, passing the restaurant to his sons. He also discovers that Aurelio and Mark are gone too. He inspects the fridge and they discuss the restaurant saying takings are up 10% and that Sammys girlfriend Dawn is the new manager. Gordon tries the food and says it is delicious and then discovers that it is the Unchicken. After going back to the restaurant he meets with Mark who tells him that they had lost respect for him and he is now working in raw food. He asks Gordon for a job. After Gordon had been to the restaurant they returned some customer favourites to the menu and the reviews were mostly positive. They closed in June 2011 posting this on their Facebook page,

In Santes place now is a german restaurant called Wirsthaus and reviews are good.

Kitchen Nightmares - Fiesta Sunrise - CLOSED

Kitchen Nightmares Fiesta Sunrise

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visit's Fiesta Sunrise, West Nyack, NY, a Mexican restaurant based in New York owned by Vic, Patty and Yolanda. Vic and Yolanda had no money to open the new restaurant so they asked Yolanda's daughter Patty to use her savings and credit to fund the business. Vic doesn't listen to them when they want to make changes and there are no customers especially as the restaurant is poorly decorated and filled with clutter. Yolanda and Vic's marriage is under strain as is the relationship between the pair of them and Patty, Patty feels resentment towards her mother for dragging her into the business. Gordon arrives and there is a sign above the door for Grill 303, he thinks the restaurant has already shut but discovers that they haven't changed the logo above the door. He is offered a free Margarita on arrival which is very strong. The restaurant is huge but only 2 tables are booked for lunch.

Gordon orders some food, he orders the combination one which is a sampler plate of burritos and other dishes. As he is reading the menu he discovers a sticker on the front which he peels off to reveal the name of another restaurant Fiesta Garibaldi, which Gordon discovers is Vics previous failed restaurant. He has kept the same menu, dishes and same chef. His food arrives, the burrito looks like someone has been sick on his plate with dry chicken, the beef is impossible to swallow and the rice tastes old. He ventures into the kitchen to talk about the food and discovers he was served old rice that was cooked days ago. Gordon sits down with Yolanda and discovers they are only taking a third of what they need to break even and are in $850,000 of debt.

Gordon witnesses a dinner service, stepping into the kitchen he comments on how huge it is and he meets Chef Ambrosio. He inspects the fridge which was cleaned "yesterday" with a bowl of rice cooked "yesterday" and even more food cooked "yesterday". It turns out to be food that was cooked last week. A customer sends back their chips as they are like cardboard and the server puts them back into the tray with the other chips! Gordon skims a layer of fat off one of the dishes and Gordon finds chives in the fridge that are 5 months old. Gordon also finds smelly curled up fish, oxidised steak wrapped in foil, pork sitting in blood and green, slimy chicken, all from "yesterday" aka as last Friday. In the walk in fridge there are massive portions of preprepared food including a garbage bin full of refried beans and ground beef that has a huge layer of fat on the top. Gordon gets angry and tells Vic that he wouldn't trust him to run a bath, let alone a restaurant. Gordon gets angry and tells Vic to take the beans into the restaurant when he refuses Gordon storms into the restaurant carrying the beans declaring that the restaurant is closed, leaving the beans for everyone to see.

Gordon sits down with Yolanda who tells him that their marriage is suffering as is the relationship with Patty but Patty is more important to her than Vic. As Patty and Don's marriage is suffering too he is invited in for a chat. He isn't happy with how Vic treats Patty and promises to be more involved. Vic isn't happy Don is there and it turns quickly into an argument. Gordon enters the kitchen and moves some plates, he discovers an infestation of cockroaches, the staff don't acknowledge the problem and Patty and Yolanda had no idea, Vic however tells Gordon was aware of the critters. Gordon calls in an exterminator and walks out. He returns to be able to witness a full dinner service as last nights was cut short. They begin the dinner service prepped and serving fresh food. However the chefs overcook the rice and Yolanda steps in, this causes the kitchen to back up and customers are left waiting for food. On one table half the customers have no food whilst the others have eaten theirs. The broiler was not cleaned and is covering the food in soot and customers walk out in frustration. Gordon is also frustrated as their takings for the evening didn't even cover the cost of staff. He goes back to New York City overnight to ponder what drastic action to take.

Gordon returns the next day with Chef Julieta Ballesteros, a top mexican chef. He has also had his team give the restaurant a makeover overnight with new chairs and tables and less clutter. There is also a new menu which Julieta teaches the chefs to prepare and cook. On relaunch night, they get off to a good start until food is sent back as cold and the chefs burn nachos. The Mayor calls to say he is going to be coming for dinner and the pressure is on. The kitchen however steps up and the Mayor brands the food as excellent and says he will come again. The other customers are also pleased with their food and overall the relaunch was a success. Gordon was impressed with Vic and takes him outside to unveil the new sign visible on the side of the building in the hopes of bringing in customers who drive along the busy highway next to the restaurant.

What Happened Next?

The restaurant was seized in September 2008 due to failing to pay taxes that were owed. It had been closed previously in July 2007 for failing to pay taxes but paid in full and were allowed to reopen, they should have learnt their lesson then! In August 2008 there was a stabbing at the restaurant. Recent images shows the building is empty and boarded up.

Kitchen Nightmares - Sabatiello's - CLOSED

Kitchen Nightmares Sabatiello's

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visit's Sabatiello's, Stamford, CT, owned by Sammy Settembre, well known in the area for working in the once famed pizzeria owned by his brother Benny. His girlfriend Lauren is a waitress and has noticed a decline in customers. Sammy believes the décor and the food to be excellent so he does not know why they have so few customers. Waiter David believes Sammy is a big problem as he can be nasty to the customers and had bad customer service. Sammy is in $1,000,000 of debt and can barely afford to stay open another year. Gordon arrives and is greeted by Sammy who tells him that the décor is nice and warm and the food is good and it is all made fresh.

Gordon sits down and orders some food. He orders the soup of the day called a Wedding Soup, lasagne and the New York Strip steak. The Wedding Soup is hideous with a mish mash of s*@t and the meatballs are anaemic, it tastes bland and like it was made yesterday. The lasagne has white meat as if chicken or veal, tastes synthetic and is not home made. The steak is tough , not seasoned properly and greasy. Overall, he says the food is consistently poor. Gordon meets Head Chef Jose who tells him the soup is three days old and that the lasagne was made last Friday and frozen, they take out portions when they need them. He also admits that the steak was a choice steak and not the aberdeen angus as advertised. Sammy denies anything is wrong with the food so Gordon inspects the kitchen and finds it to be spotlessly clean. However, upon inspecting the fridge he discovers cooked and raw chicken next to each other, which Sammy thinks is no problem.

Gordon arrives to witness a dinner service. There is a Sole Special on the menu and Jose tells Gordon that it is stuffed with imitation crab meat rather than the real thing. Gordon is not impressed and they taste the dish. Sammy says it is not bad whereas Gordon spits it out saying it is watery and mushy. Customers are not impressed with their food and one customer in particular is not happy with her lamb and returns it to be cooked some more. Sammy tells the chef to put it on the microwave and when the customer receives it back again she sends it back saying that it has clearly been put in the microwave and she expected them to put it back into a pan. Sammy gets involved and goes into the restaurant to confront the customer, he handles it badly and refuses to apologise. It is girlfriend Lauren that has to apologise to the customers for his behaviour. Gordon tells Sammy that he is the biggest problem as he is so hard to work with. The next morning he sits Sammy down to talk about the past and his brother Benny and the original restaurant. For the next dinner service Gordon introduces two new specials, a home made Lasagne and a Filet Mignon to be carved at the table. The restaurant is busy and Sammy is in the kitchen, Jose is not communicating with his staff and the problems begin. Jose has problems cooking the steaks and they are returned for being undercooked and the kitchen gets backed up. Gordon tells Sammy the kitchen is now a big problem and Sammy says Jose is on his last chance. The next day Gordon introduces a new menu changing the restaurant into an Italian Steakhouse, something unique in the community. Gordon introduces the new dishes to the staff and they sample all the new steaks on the menu.

Relaunch night arrives and the biggest challenge was whether Jose could handle cooking the steaks how the customers would like them without under cooking them. Jose proves he isn't up to the task and the steaks are sent back as undercooked once again and the kitchen falls behind. Sammy makes the decision to step behind the line and help them out. He successfully turns the kitchen around and after the wait the customers are happy with their food and happy with the changes Gordon has made and the relaunch is dubbed as a success despite the glitches.

What Happened Next?

Sabatiello's closed in October 2008, it was reported that the owner was to open a pizzeria with his brother in Greenwich. Prior to closing there was a sign outside the restaurant and a flyer handed out that read "Celebrity Chef Gordon Ramsay's favorite Italian in Fairfield County". Since then it has become Quattro Pazzi and reviews are very good. It appears he did in fact open Sabatiello Gourmet Pizza in Riverside in December 2008 which closed as the rent was not paid. It then became Marco Polo Gourmet Pizza. Sammy has been arrested on various occasions. Sammy can now be found working as a Chef in New York at The Appalachian Market, a gas station that also serves food, Pizza being a speciality.

Kitchen Nightmares - Hannah & Mason's - CLOSED

Kitchen Nightmares Hannah & Mason's

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visit's Hannah and Mason's, Cranbury, NJ, a French style bistro owned by Chris and Brian, who bought the restaurant having worked as Chef's for the previous owner. Chris does everything, ordering food, managing the staff and also works as a cook, Brian is lazy. Gordon arrives and notices that the awning is missing a H and reads annah and Mason's and is surprised when he meets the manager as he is so young. Gordon sits down to order food and orders an onion soup, quiche and lamb lollipop. The soup tastes like dish water with greasy onion and a thick layer of cheese, the quiche is runny as if someone forgot to put it in the fridge and the lamb lollipops are undercooked. Gordon heads into the kitchen and meets the owners, Brian admits that he doesn't want to own a restaurant and doesn't have new ideas.

Gordon returns for an evening service, he quickly notices the dessert display with old desserts which is for display only and that the quality isn't checked as rotten lettuce nearly leaves the kitchen. Gordon questions the cook who tells him that he hasn't washed the lettuce as it comes in pre-washed! Gordon notices that a dessert is missing from the display tray and it appears to have made it out to a customer! Concerned at this, Gordon checks the storage and walk-in and finds mouldy food but when he finds raw and cooked chicken together he is forced to shut the kitchen down. He shouts at Brian as he leaves the staff to ask the customers to leave and this makes them rather upset. Gordon goes for a drive and notices all the local farms and returns with fresh apples. Brian has an attitude so he teaches Chris a dish using the local apples, Brian just threatens to leave if Gordon shouts at him again. Gordon asks Chris to lead the kitchen and Brian decides to leave the kitchen before returning after a pep talk from Gordon. Overnight, the restaurant is given a makeover with a new country, farm style and a new deli counter has been added to sell local farm produce. The roles are suddenly reversed, Chris isn't happy in the slightest and negative whereas Brian is energised and eager to make it work!

For relaunch night, Gordon tells them that to make a profit they are going to need to flip tables due to the size of the restaurant. The customers love the new food but it isn't long before the orders are backed up and in order to flip tables they need to get the food out quickly. They run out of mashed potatoes and Chris wants to give them a substitute but Gordon steps in and calls him lazy for not even beginning to cook some more before giving in. The relaunch overall is a success, Chris admits he will need time to get used to the changes but wants to commit to making it work.

What Happened Next?

The restaurant closed in February 2010, according to Chris due to less customers, the state of the economy and also Gordon's new menu alienated the loyal customers. He returned to the previous menu but that did not stop the restaurant closing. After filming Chris was teaching part time at the local college and looking after his children. Chris is currently Associate Research Chef at Pinnacle Foods Corporation according to his linkedin profile. It is rumoured that Brian Kelly was chef at The Lamp Post in Jersey City, NJ in 2010.

Kitchen Nightmares Spanish Pavillion

Episode Recap

Chef Gordon Ramsay visits Spanish Pavillion in Harrison, New Jersey, opened in 1976 by Antonio Fernandez, he left the restaurant to his daughter Balbina and his grandsons Michael and Jerry. Since they took over it began to struggle, the customers dislike the food and the lack of interest in the business is visible from Michael and Jerry. Michael is barely in the kitchen, Jerry is barely in the restaurant and Balbina is stuck in the middle of the feuding sons. The restaurant has few diners and is in $550,000 debt. Gordon arrives at the restaurant at lunch service and is not pleased with the waiters in their tuxedos. He is greeted by Jerry and Balbina and is given the history of the restaurant.

Gordon sits down to sample the food, he orders lobster bisque, paella and a chicken and garlic main course. Gordon is not impressed with the bisque saying the lobster looked like it was already dead before it was cooked. Jerry tells him that the lobster came from the tank and when he looks in the tank there is a dead and decaying lobster, a risk as the lobsters will eat the dead one and become infected with bacteria. Gordon tries the dreadful chicken and garlic dish, it arrives swimming in oil and the chicken is dry. It doesn’t get any better as the paella is over seasoned and over cooked. Gordon is astonished to hear that the head chef Michael didn't cook or taste any of his meal.

Gordon arrives to observe a dinner service and Michael is behind the bar. The food goes out at a reasonable pace but is soon returned to the kitchen. Both brothers go into the kitchen to try rectify and improve the situation but instead make it worse. They argue and as Michael gets more angrier he ends up pushing cook Al and is removed from the kitchen and severely reprimanded for his unacceptable behaviour.

Gordon arrives the next morning to have a look around the restaurant. He finds multiple bags and buckets of shellfish in the freezer with no dates on. The walk-in is absolutely packed with meats and the fridge in the kitchen has dead lobsters inside. A rogue pigeon is flying around the kitchen. Gordon shows them what he has found and tells Michael that he is wasting money buying so much food, he admits he is to blame but he is overwhelmed. Gordon teaches Michael a garlic chicken dish and Michael makes a octopus special that Gordon loves, both dishes become the specials for that evenings service. Server Joe struggles to learn the new dishes as he has been used to the same menu for 20 years!

For the evening dinner service, Michael is working behind the line and Jerry is expediting at the pass. Michael shows his lack of confidence at first but the customers love the new dishes. Michael begins to fold under the pressure and customers begin to get frustrated at having to wait A chicken dish is sent back to the kitchen and Gordon discovers they have used spoiled chicken! Jerry steps up
and the food begins to leave the kitchen and customers are happy. Gordon is impressed with Jerry  but the quality control needs to dramatically improve.

Overnight, the restaurant is given a makeover with new furniture and china. Michael and Balbina love the new makeover. Gordon shows them there are 40 Spanish restaurants all  2 miles, the market is saturated they need something that will make them stand out. Gordon introduces a range of  home made tapas dishes and tells them no more tuxes for the waiters!

For relaunch night, both brothers are excited but worried. The kitchen gets off to a great start as customers love the food. But as more diners arrive the kitchen begins to fall apart with Michael getting confused and not listening to Jerry. Michael starts to get angry and Gordon pulls him aside to tell him to get it together and respect his brother, he turns it around and the relaunch ends a success. With a final pep talk from Gordon he tells them they can turn this around and praises them for the good job they did at the relaunch.

What Happened Next?

Gordon revisits and sneaks around the back to have a look in the fridge and finds it organised and clean. Jerry reports business is good and that Michael is no longer involved in the restaurant. Gordon checks the lobster tank. Gordon orders a paella and Jerry sits down to eat with him, he says it is delicious. Sadly his Grandfather passed away between filming and the revisit. They are open with mostly good reviews.
